Lyrics

Any Passing Guru

The voice from the radio in your car,
The wine soaked graduates in the bar,
The gazing readers of the stars,
They don’t really know what they’re talking about.
Those sweet words they just come tumbling out.
No matter how much they scream,
No matter how much they shout,
They don’t really know what they’re talking about.

The pretty people on TV,
The raving madman on the street,
Any passing guru you do meet,
They don’t really know what they’re talking about.
Those sweet words they just come tumbling out.
No matter how much they scream,
No matter how much they shout,
They don’t really know what the hell that it is their jaws are flapping about.
What they’re yapping about…

Comment: I read lots of self-help, business and spiritual gurus, and while I love soaking up all that collected wisdom, I wrote this to remind myself and others that at the end of the day, it’s all a load of hot air, at least on the one hand. Back when Darren Whittingham* and I used to do this tune during our regular, seedy, late-night St Kilda (Melbourne) bar gigs, I used to introduce this as “a cautionary tale for young”. Darren used to smirk at that every time without fail…

*Darren used to play in a band with me (and the others) called Quill and then for years we performed as a duo. He’s a great guitarist and I hope to upload some of the tunes we did together in good time.
